Karyotype testing in Swindon, made simple

A karyotype test shows the number and structure of the chromosomes in your own blood sample. You can collect it at home with the Tasso Home Collection Kit, have your blood drawn at a Jeen partner clinic, or book a home-nurse visit. Where we have a partner clinic in or near Swindon, it is listed with its address in the Clinic network section further down this page.

A karyotype test in Swindon can show missing or extra chromosomes and larger structural changes, including balanced translocations and inversions. Nothing is gained or lost in a balanced rearrangement, so a microarray test, which measures the amount of DNA present, cannot see it - which is why karyotyping is still used when investigating infertility and recurrent miscarriage. It cannot see changes smaller than about 5-10 million base pairs, single-gene variants or most other causes of miscarriage or infertility, so a normal result does not rule out a genetic cause. Microarray is better suited to smaller deletions and duplications.

The test needs cells that grow in the laboratory. If they do not, we arrange a free redraw. Results take about 10-14 working days from when the laboratory receives a sample drawn at a clinic or by a home nurse, and about 17-21 working days with the Tasso kit, because Tasso samples can only be posted Monday to Wednesday. Your genetic counsellor reviews every report, and we book a follow-up consultation if findings are high-risk. Genetic counselling is available on request.

This test looks at your own chromosomes and is not a test of a pregnancy. If you are pregnant and want to know about your baby's chromosomes, your midwife or fetal medicine team can explain options such as NIPT, CVS and amniocentesis.

Tasso Home Collection Kit

How to collect blood with the Tasso device

The Tasso device is a small, single-use kit that collects a blood sample from your upper arm without a needle in your vein. A gentle button-press opens tiny channels just under the skin, and the sample is drawn into a collection tube. It takes a few minutes at home - no clinic visit, no phlebotomist. Follow the four steps below to collect your sample correctly.

  1. Attaching the green collection tube to the Tasso device
    1

    Attach the collection tube

Take the green-capped collection tube from your kit and attach it to the base of the Tasso device until it clicks into place.

  2. Pressing the button to activate the Tasso device on the upper shoulder
    2

Place on your shoulder and activate

Press the device firmly onto your clean, dry upper shoulder so it sticks, then press the red button to begin collection. Keep it in place and let the tube fill.

  3. Collection tube filled to above the 400 mark
    3

Check the blood level, then remove the tube

The blood level must reach at least another 200 above the 400 mark on the tube - fill close to the top, but do not overfill. Once there is enough blood, remove the collection tube from the device.

  4. Closing the tube, gently shaking it, and sealing it in the biohazard bag
    4

Close, shake and prepare for return

Close the green cap securely and shake the tube gently to mix. Complete the label, seal the tube inside the biohazard bag, and return it using the prepaid packaging in your kit. Don't forget to include your completed test requisition form in the box.

Posting window - Monday to Wednesday only. So your sample reaches the lab fresh, post it back on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. We cannot accept samples posted after 12pm on Wednesday - if you miss the window, hold your kit and post it the following Monday. Because of this window, Tasso results take around 7 working days longer than our other collection methods (about 17-21 working days in total).

Please note: the Tasso blood collection device may very rarely leave a permanent mark of approximately 2 mm on the shoulder. Although the mark is usually barely visible, please consider this before selecting this blood collection option.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

How much does a karyotype test cost in Swindon?

A Jeen Health karyotype test in Swindon costs £290 for a single person and £550 for a couple. Both options include lab analysis at our partner laboratory and a clinical-grade results report. Genetic counselling is available on request and is not included as standard. It is included if, in the quick check before checkout, you say you are currently pregnant or that there are known genetic concerns in you or your family.

Where can I get a karyotype test in Swindon?

You can collect your sample at home with the Tasso Home Collection Kit (included in the price, and the default option), have your blood drawn at a Jeen Clinic Network partner clinic (+£40 for one person, +£80 for a couple), or book a home-nurse visit (+£65 for one person, +£130 for a couple). Partner clinics near Swindon, where we have them, are listed in the Clinic network section of this page. Once your consent form is signed, your Tasso kit is dispatched by next-day delivery, and your sample must be posted back on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

How long do karyotype results take in Swindon?

Turnaround depends on how you collect your sample. The clinic and home-nurse blood-draw options take about 10-14 working days from when the lab receives your sample. The default Tasso home-collection kit takes a little longer - about 17-21 working days - because Tasso samples can only be posted Monday to Wednesday. Your genetic counsellor reviews every report, and we book a follow-up consultation if findings are high-risk.

Why might I need a karyotype test in Swindon?

Karyotype testing is most often recommended after recurrent miscarriage, unexplained infertility, or where there's a known family history of chromosomal disorders such as balanced translocations or large deletions. It identifies structural changes that hormone panels and standard fertility tests miss.

Do I need a GP referral for karyotype testing in Swindon?

No referral needed. Anyone aged 18+ can book Karyotype Chromosome Analysis in Swindon directly with Jeen Health. After you order we email you a short pre-test video and your consent form, and once the form is signed your kit is dispatched by next-day delivery (or we send a link to book a clinic or home-nurse blood draw). Genetic counselling is available on request.

What are the limits of a karyotype test?

A karyotype looks at the number and structure of your chromosomes under a microscope, so it only sees changes larger than about 5-10 million base pairs. It cannot detect smaller deletions or duplications, single-gene variants or most other causes of miscarriage or infertility, so a normal result does not rule out a genetic cause. It needs cells that grow in the laboratory; if they do not, we arrange a free redraw. It analyses the chromosomes in your own blood sample and is not a test of a pregnancy - if you are pregnant, your midwife or fetal medicine team can explain options such as NIPT, CVS and amniocentesis.
